The Beast Of The Backroads is an annual endurance event that challenges cyclists to navigate the demanding “pineywood” hills of East Texas. Owned and operated by Texas Outlaw Rides LLC, this event is designed for those seeking a rugged and high energy racing atmosphere. The course is entirely paved, taking riders through a scenic loop from Longview to Hallsville, Harleton, and Marshall. With approximately 7,000 feet of elevation gain on the premier 100 mile loop, this ride is a true test of stamina and climbing ability.
The weekend is structured as a multi sport celebration. While the cycling races take place on Saturday, the event continues on Sunday with various running and rucking distances. Participants often refer to the unique challenge of trying to “outrun the donkey,” a nod to the event’s mascot and outlaw branding. Whether you are competing for the substantial cash purse or simply looking to finish one of the shorter distances, the Beast Of The Backroads provides a professional and well supported race environment.
Ride Distances
The Beast Of The Backroads offers three distinct cycling route options to ensure that every rider finds a challenge suited to their goals:
100 Mile Race: The premier ultra endurance route featuring a competitive field and significant elevation.
65 Mile Ride: A challenging intermediate distance that captures the beauty of the East Texas hills.
25 Mile Ride: A shorter, high intensity route perfect for those looking for a fast morning in the saddle.
Prizes and Swag
The 100 mile race is a highlight for competitive athletes, offering cash prizes for the top five male and female finishers. The prize structure is as follows: 1st Place: $1,000; 2nd Place: $700; 3rd Place: $500; 4th Place: $350; 5th Place: $200. Beyond the cash awards, all registered participants receive high quality gear, including a heavy hoodie, a soft T-shirt, a custom water bottle, and a finisher medal.
Support and Logistics
Texas Outlaw Rides LLC ensures a fully supported and marked course for all participants. Riders can expect well stocked aid stations and a mandatory riders’ meeting at 8:00 AM on Saturday to review safety protocols and course conditions. The 100 mile race begins at 8:15 AM, followed by the 65 mile and 25 mile starts. Because the race takes place on a private ranch and surrounding public roads, all participants must adhere to standard safety gear requirements.
