The North Texas bike gods just cracked open the piggy bank. The Regional Transportation Council dropped $74 million on a dozen projects across DFW, and for once, it ain’t just another patch of sidewalk near a strip mall.
Top of the payout pile? A $7.7 million chunk for the long-promised trail along DART’s Silver Line in Addison. Yes, that ghost rail project that’s been under construction since before your bottom bracket needed replacing. If you’ve ever tried riding from Carrollton to Addison without hitting six boulevards and a Whataburger parking lot, you know this one’s overdue.
Carrollton’s also cashing in: $12 million is going to the T.C. Rice Trail, which’ll stitch together Hebron Station and Frankford Station. That’s DCTA meeting DART in what may finally become an actual bike route instead of just a dream and a Strava heatmap.
Up north, Denton’s extending the Sycamore Trail, giving better access to folks near the DCTA’s downtown stop. That means fewer riders white-knuckling it through those weird triangle intersections near UNT.
And yes, Fort Worth, Frisco, and even little Crowley are in the mix. Full list of trail cash? It’s right here in black and white.
Call it the federal trail stimulus, or just a long-overdue apology to everyone who’s ever tried to ride from Oak Cliff to a DART station without playing Frogger. Either way, the dirt’s about to move.
We’ll be ridewatching.
