Date: November 4 – 7, 2022
Event: Spinistry-palooza the Ultimate Bikepacking and Gravel Adventure Camp
Route: 125-mile loop
About the Ride:
T-shirt fee is waived for Club Spinistry members!
Please note, at this time we are only accepting “kickstarter” signups as we finalize the event details. Kickstarter signup is only open to Club Spinistry members and there are only limited slots available. Kickstarter funds will allow us to finalize the routes and hosting facilities. It will require an additional trip or two (depending on how scouting goes) to finalize everything and review the facilities in person. We are confident that our “rough draft” for the weekend will be close to what we have in mind. Over 75% of the planned route is on roads we have used previously. Our primary hosting facilities have already been verified and vetted.
As a kickstarter signup you are eligible for reduced pricing AND you will receive a snazzy t-shirt in the mail soon as an early registration souvenir at no extra cost. The prices will definitely go up once the kickstarter is sold out and t-shirts will be an optional add on for those participants. As a kickstarter signup you agree and understand that the weekend’s details are not yet final and things may change from the current “rough draft”. What is guaranteed not to change is that it will be an amazing weekend on the bike in some the most amazing parts of Texas.
The rough draft bikepacking format looks like this:
Friday night main camp/staging area near Terlingua. This will be where everyone can park their vehicles for the weekend. You will need to plan to tent camp if you plan to stay Friday night. There is the option to arrive early Saturday morning and depart with the group but it is the same price so might as well socialize with everyone Friday night.
Our main loop as mapped is approximately 125 miles to be travelled by bicycle Saturday, Sunday and possibly Monday morning. Saturday and Sunday camping is included as are “aid stations” with water, snacks, and “restrooms”. Be aware that real toilets aren’t generally available in Big Bend. “Restrooms” will consist of portajohns or camping buckets most likely.
Riders will essentially have the option to ride as far as they wish each day with the option to shortcut the route if needed. Our main camping areas will be spaced approximately every 40ish miles but the aid stations can be used for camping purposes if needed as well. We hope to have attendants at each of the aid stations through the weekend but we haven’t started those arrangements yet. We want to finalize the route first, then verify the aid station locations. Then we will look into staffing options for the aid stations.
We will have sweep vehicles circulating the course for troubleshooting purposes. Most riders will likely make it back to main camp/staging/parking for Sunday evening festivities there. If there is interest we will provide some route suggestions for ultra endurance/self supported/back country adventures for riders with previous experience along those lines.
We also plan to have a single day gravel grinder option available. Most likely on Saturday. That component will definitely be fleshed out after all of the other pieces are finalized. Realistically, if you are making the trip down you will want to do the full weekend adventure. Guided and semi supported add-ons will likely be available as well. Those pieces would be at an additional cost and with limited space. Kickstarter signups will get the first chance at those add-ons once they are available.
Q&A
Q: What type of bike is best?
A: Hardtail 29er would be best (flat or drop bar). A full suspension MTB could still work but will mostly be overkill. A gravel rig with 40+ tires would be okay, 45+ would be better. Tubeless for sure.
