Ride through the beautiful rural Central Texas countryside with the Fire Ant 100 event.
I spoke with Jo-Ann Sugg about the event.
- As a cyclist, why join Fire Ant 100
You get a beautiful ride through the countryside enjoying the clean fresh air. The course also provides flat land, curves and a few hills. We also provide the very best customer service and rest stops. Awesome Fire Ant t-shirt is an added bonus. Free passes from our city fitness center with indoor pool/ showers or pass to our outdoor pool. - How long has the event been around?
This is our 25th year - What was the motivation behind starting the event and who benefits from it?
Our purpose is to provide scholarship money for local high school students. Some of the scholarships are for the outstanding youth for academics and community service. Another group of scholarships is for students who have overcome difficulties in their lives and still graduate. - How have they been able to utilize the funds in the past?
Yes we send funds directly to educational institutions. To date we are at $50,000+ in Scholarships from our events.
- Logistically, can you give us an idea of how many volunteers, and the planning it takes to put on this event?
We are a small organizations in a small community so usually 20 active members plus other community organizations and businesses help with our rest stops. - What has been the most rewarding experience throughout the years hosting this event?
First is being able to help young people strive for their future and their education. A wonderful reward we also get is meeting such a diverse group of people that are into cycling. - What is the average number of participants?
Usually about 140- we have had as few as 100 and as many as 200. - If you had to come up with a David Letterman style Top 10 about the race, what would it read like?
Fire Ant Tour is better than a fat lady in spandex.
You can pucker up with pickle pops!
